When to go
  • Go anytime. Climate is not a major consideration, as Singapore gets fairly steady annual rainfall. Instead, coordinate your visit with one of the various festivals and events: Thaipusam is a spectacular Hindu festival, occurring around February. If shopping and eating are major concerns, April brings the Singapore Food Festival and the Great Singapore Sale is held in June.
Events
  • Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year - is the biggest event in the Chinese calendar and the biggest in Singapore. The celebrations include parades and festivals. Each year the dates change according to the lunar cycle of the Chinese calendar.
  • Thaipusam - This annual festival is celebrated by Hindus to give thanks to Lord Subramaniam, the child god who represents virtue, youth, beauty, and valor. During Thaipusam, male Hindus who have made prayers to Subramaniam for special wishes must carry kavadis in gratitude. These huge steel racks are decorated with flowers and fruits and are held onto the men's bodies by skewers and hooks that pierce the skin. (Late January/early February.)
  • The Dragon Boat Festival
  • The Singapore Food Festival - Local chefs compete for honors in this month-long exhibition of international culinary delights. It's a good time to be eating in Singapore, as restaurants feature the brand-new creations they have entered in the events. Contact the STB for details. July
  • Singapore Arts Festival - During this month-long festival, premier local, regional, and international music and dance performances are staged in a number of venues. The cultural performances, some modern and some traditional, are always excellent and are highly recommended. Check out www.singaporeartsfest.com. June.

Shopping
  • Summer brings with it the excitement of anticipating the coming Singapore Sale, when tourists flock to the city to take advantage of fantastic deals on consumer items including electronic gadgets and jewellery.
  • The Great Singapore Sale - This is a month-long promotion to increase retail sales, and most shops will advertise huge savings for the entire month. It's well publicized with red banners all over Orchard Road. July.
Nightlife
  • Boat Quay and Clarke Quay - offering a mix of restaurants and pubs. Public also mixed: party-goers, others just out for a pint after work, couples chatting over a leisurely dinner, and tourists
  • Orchard Road - This famous shopping belt also harbors some great clubs. The theme changes every night, and the music ranges from pop to retro to house. The public: well-heeled and chic
  • Mohammed Sultan Road - the street has been transformed into a vital, throbbing artery of Singapore's nightlife
  • Many of the bars and clubs have taken on a unique Singapore or Southeast Asian character; you'll find restored Chinese godowns pumping out rap or retro, trendy bars of glass-and-steel exteriors and buddhist temple-style interiors, historic drinking dens that will you bring back to the days of the Raj
